The Volta Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Makafui Woanyah, has called on members of the party to remain steadfast and rally behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Addressing party faithful during Dr. Bawumia’s campaign tour in Hohoe, Chairman Woanyah emphasized that history has shown consistency in maintaining candidates often leads to eventual electoral success.
“In the political market, there are rules. And the rule, as evident in Ghana, is that consistency is the key. We’ve seen it with the NDC, and we’ve seen it with the NPP, when you take a product to the market and it is not bought, repeat that product, and it will eventually be bought,” Woanyah stated.
The regional chairman cited the experiences of former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as examples of persistence leading to victory.
“President Kufuor went twice before we got it. President Akufo-Addo went three times before we got it,” he reminded party supporters, suggesting that Dr. Bawumia should be given another opportunity to lead the NPP into the next election.
Chairman Woanyah also drew parallels with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), pointing out that former Presidents John Evans Atta Mills and John Dramani Mahama both made multiple attempts at the presidency before eventually winning.
“Mahama went three times and got it. The first was because President Mills passed away, and with the mourning and sympathies, he won in 2012. But when he came back in 2016, he lost. They repeated him in 2020 — he lost again — and then he came back in 2024,” he explained, arguing that persistence remains a proven political strategy.
