The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched a comprehensive internal restructuring exercise, including plans to establish a strengthened and dedicated policy unit, as part of efforts to reposition the party for the 2028 general election.
The announcement was made by the party’s newly elected presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, during a post-election thanksgiving service held last Sunday at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Auditorium.
The thanksgiving event followed what party leaders described as a peaceful and incident-free internal electoral process, culminating in the election of Dr Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer.
Addressing party executives, Members of Parliament, former ministers, clergy, regional and constituency officers, polling station executives and grassroots organisers, Dr Bawumia characterised the moment as a transition point, the end of one reform phase and the beginning of a rebuilding chapter.
He announced that the party would reorganise its policy architecture through the creation of a dedicated policy unit tasked with refining, coordinating and marketing the NPP’s alternative policy proposals to the Ghanaian electorate.
The proposed policy unit, according to Dr Bawumia, will operate alongside a broader organisational reorganisation at the national, regional, constituency and grassroots levels to strengthen the party’s campaign machinery.
“On this day, as we celebrate and give thanks together, I want to ask all of us, from the bottom of my heart, that we forgive one another for some of the unpalatable things we may have said during the campaign,” he said.
He urged members to move beyond factionalism and personal grievances, stressing that genuine healing would require honest engagement, accountability and a recommitment to shared values.
Positioning the rebuilding effort within the broader national context, he cautioned that victory in 2028 would not be automatic.
“Victory in 2028 will not be gifted to us. It must be earned, constituency by constituency and household by household, with humility and purpose,” he stated.
