A fresh controversy has erupted around the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) after reports emerged that private legal practitioner and member of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), Martin Kpebu, has been detained at an undisclosed location allegedly on the orders of Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng after honouring an invitation from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
According to preliminary accounts, the arrest is linked to comments made by Mr. Kpebu in recent media engagements, where he sharply criticised the performance of the Special Prosecutor and described the OSP as “incompetent” in handling corruption cases.
He had been invited to the OSP to provide clarity on public allegations he recently made, accusing Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng of incompetence and mismanaging corruption investigations.
Sources say tensions arose when Mr. Kpebu protested the composition of the investigative committee assigned to his case, insisting instead on an “independently constituted” panel. His objections reportedly led to a standoff, culminating in his arrest.
Lawyers for Mr. Kpebu have since claimed that he is being held at an undisclosed location, raising fears of unlawful detention. They maintain that the arrest is an attempt to intimidate him for publicly criticising the Special Prosecutor.
“The detention of our client, following his attendance upon the OSP, represents a troubling abuse of power. His whereabouts remain unknown to his legal team and family,” the lawyers said in a statement, warning that the development undermines constitutional protections and the right to free expression.
Mr. Kpebu, known for his outspoken stance on corruption and constitutional matters, has frequently criticised state institutions, often urging stronger transparency and reform. His reported detention has intensified scrutiny on the OSP, which has in recent months faced public pressure over stalled key investigations and alleged administrative lapses.
