Karaga MCE Allegedly Orders Disconnection of Nyensobga Community After MP Intervenes to Restore Electricity Supply Following Months of Blackout

Published:

Tension is brewing in the Karaga Municipality following reports that the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Iddrisu Yakubu Dasana, allegedly ordered the disconnection of Nyensobga community from the national electricity grid after the Member of Parliament for the area intervened to restore power to the community.

Nyensobga, a farming community located some seven kilometers from the district capital, had been without electricity for months due to a faulty transformer.

Ibrahim Iddi, the community’s Assemblyman, said he had reported the issue to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and followed up severally at the district office but received no results.

Following lack of results from his efforts, the Assembly Member said the chief of Nyensobga sent a delegation to seek the help of the Member of Parliament for the area.

Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, NPP MP and former Finance Minister is said to have immediately contacted relevant authorities, leading to the immediate installation of a new transformer, thereby restoring electricity supply to the community.

The development is reported to have angered the MCE, who, according to multiple sources, instructed NEDCo officials to disconnect the community until he returned from Accra.

When NEDCo officials declined, citing professional ethics, the MCE allegedly directed some supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by one Iddrisu Siibi, to manually remove the fuse from the transformer, effectively cutting off power to the community once again.

The MCE is reported to have told the community they had no right to expect any development projects from the Government since they haven’t voted for the NDC in recent elections.

Efforts to reach Mr. Iddrisu Yakubu Dasana for his side of the story proved unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, Nyensobga residents have appealed to the Northern Regional Minister and national authorities to intervene, describing the development as politically motivated and detrimental to the community’s welfare.
