The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has disclosed that the government requires approximately GHS140 million to fully operationalize the Bokoro Agenda 111 Hospital in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region.
Despite being commissioned three months ago, the facility remains non-functional due to the incomplete installation of medical equipment. During a visit to the hospital on Monday, March 10, the Health Minister revealed that only 10% of the necessary medical equipment had been installed, making the facility unfit to provide healthcare services.
Hospital Commissioned Before Completion
The hospital was officially inaugurated by former President Nana Akufo-Addo just two days before the December 2024 general elections. However, Minister Akandoh revealed that at the time of commissioning, the facility was far from being operational.
He stressed that a hospital is more than just its physical structure and that essential equipment must be installed before it can serve the public.
“When we talk about a hospital being in operation, it is not just the brick and mortar. That is why I was requesting to see certain departments in the places. You cannot commission a project without hospital equipment being installed,” he stated.
According to the Minister, the government must urgently allocate funds to complete the installation of medical equipment to ensure the hospital delivers quality healthcare services. He noted that additional expenses are necessary to make the facility fully functional.
“Completing the project is one thing, and paying for the project to become a property of the state is also another thing. As we speak, we need to cough up not less than $9 million for this particular project alone,” Mr. Akandoh explained.
