In a bold move that aligns with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s push for technological advancement and clean energy, Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced a major government initiative to transform traditional fuel stations into electric vehicle (EV) charging centres.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to accelerate Ghana’s transition to clean energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Speaking at an energy policy forum on Wednesday, Mr. Jinapor emphasized the importance of preparing for the inevitable shift toward electric mobility, a vision that reflects Dr. Bawumia’s longstanding advocacy for innovation and sustainable solutions.
“With technological advancements, you can now fully charge your car in just five to ten minutes and continue your journey,” Mr. Jinapor stated. “What we are going to do is convert most of our filling stations by allocating space for charging stations.”
The Minister highlighted the anticipated surge in electric vehicle adoption in the coming years, projecting a major transformation in Ghana’s transport sector within the next decade. He reassured stakeholders that the government is taking proactive measures to position Ghana as a leader in Africa’s green energy transition.
He also pointed to rapid advancements in EV charging efficiency as a key enabler of this transition, making the switch to electric mobility more practical and accessible for Ghanaians.
To facilitate this shift, the government has partnered with BYD, a leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, to introduce cutting-edge charging technology in Ghana. Mr. Jinapor revealed that this innovation will allow EVs to be fully charged in just five minutes, eliminating one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption—charging time.
“We are also going to deploy BYD to bring in new technology. With this innovation, in just five minutes, your car will be fully charged,” he added.
The initiative is yet another testament to Vice President Bawumia’s leadership in digital transformation and sustainable development. His vision for a modernized, tech-driven economy has paved the way for innovative policies like this, ensuring that Ghana is not left behind in the global transition to clean energy.
With the government’s strong commitment to building a robust EV infrastructure, Ghana is positioning itself as a leader in Africa’s clean energy revolution. The conversion of fuel stations into EV charging centres marks a major milestone in the country’s journey toward a greener and more energy-efficient future.
