Bawumia Rallies NPP to Build on 2024 Gains for 2028 Victory

Published:

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged party members to rally behind his candidature to consolidate the nearly 42% of votes secured in the 2024 general elections, stressing that the party’s path to victory in 2028 lies in continuity rather than introducing a new face.

Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd after filing his nomination at the NPP headquarters on Thursday, August 28, Dr. Bawumia underscored his years of service and sacrifice to the party, declaring himself the most prepared candidate to lead the NPP into the next general elections.

“In the last 60 years, I have had the privilege to join every constituency at least five times to work hard on the ground and campaign for the NPP. Just like thousands of you who may not have had all the money in the world to throw at the party, my sweat, reputation, knowledge, and person have been dedicated to the party’s success. That is why there is no village, city, or town where Mahamudu Bawumia’s name is not known,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia argued that the NPP must build on the foundation laid in 2024 instead of “starting afresh.”

“If we are to win 2028, we ought not to start afresh from zero. Instead, we must build on the nearly 42% of valid votes we secured and push beyond the 50% mark in the next election,” he emphasized.

The filing event drew hundreds of supporters who thronged the party headquarters to show solidarity. Accompanied by his wife, Samira Bawumia, the former Vice President was received with cheers and chants as he officially submitted his nomination forms.

Dr. Bawumia is set for a fierce contest in the primaries. His closest contender in the 2023 flagbearership race, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, has already filed his nomination. Other aspirants include former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong, Abetifi MP and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who is expected to file later today.

The NPP’s flagbearer election is scheduled for January 31, 2025.
