The government has announced a significant upward review of the Airport Passenger Service Charge, increasing the fee from GH¢5 to GH¢100, effective January 1, 2026. This represents a 1,900% jump and marks the first adjustment to the charge since it was introduced in 2010.
According to the Ministry of Transport, the decision forms part of a broader revenue-enhancement strategy aimed at improving aviation infrastructure, enhancing passenger experience, and strengthening safety and security systems across the country’s airports.
Officials explain that over the past 15 years, rising operational costs, increased demand for modern aviation technology, and the need for continuous maintenance of airport facilities have made the GH¢5 charge unsustainable. The new amount, they say, is expected to provide the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) with the financial space to upgrade key installations, including terminal facilities, baggage-handling systems, and emergency response capabilities.
However, there is a fear that the sharp hike may increase the cost of domestic travel at a time when many Ghanaians are already under economic pressure. The new GH¢100 Airport Passenger Service Charge will be applied to all domestic air travelers beginning in 2026.
