COCOBOD Dismisses False Reports on Cocoa Price Increase

Published:

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has debunked circulating claims on social media that the government has announced an increase in cocoa prices to 70% of the world market price for farmers. In a statement shared on its official social media platforms, COCOBOD clarified that the reports are entirely false and should be disregarded by the public.

The viral social media flyer falsely attributed the announcement to the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, suggesting that cocoa farmers would now receive 70% of the world market price for their produce. COCOBOD, however, has labeled this information as misleading.

“Our attention has been drawn to a false flyer circulating on social media claiming that the Minister for Food and Agriculture has announced an increase in cocoa prices. This information is completely untrue. We urge our cherished stakeholders and the public to disregard this fake news and rely only on official communication from COCOBOD and the Ministry,” the regulatory body posted.

COCOBOD emphasized the importance of relying on verified and official communication channels for updates on cocoa pricing and other matters affecting the cocoa industry. The spread of false information, it noted, undermines efforts to ensure transparency and effective communication with stakeholders.

While COCOBOD remains committed to improving the livelihoods of cocoa farmers—who are integral to Ghana’s economy—there has been no official announcement of a price increment matching the 70% figure stated in the viral flyer.

Cocoa farming plays a vital role in Ghana’s economy, contributing significantly to foreign exchange earnings and rural development. Any future decisions regarding cocoa pricing will reflect the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and enhancing their welfare.

COCOBOD’s swift response to the false claims highlights the need for vigilance against misinformation, urging the public to verify any news through credible and official sources.
