Cholera Outbreak Update: 6,145 Cases Recorded, 719 confirmed cases, 49 deaths – Health Minister

Published:

The cholera outbreak that began in October 2024 in Ada West, Greater Accra Region, has spread across five regions, with alarming statistics reported by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. Speaking in Parliament on February 18, 2025, the Minister revealed that as of February 13, 2025, the outbreak has resulted in 6,145 recorded cases, 719 confirmed cases, and 49 deaths.

“Mr. Speaker, I must put on record that the current cholera outbreak began over 5 months ago,” Akandoh stated. “It has unfortunately spread to other districts in Greater Accra and four other regions, namely Central, Western, Ashanti, and Eastern Regions.”

The Central Region remains the hardest hit, with active cases concentrated in the districts of Agona West and Effutu. Over the past week, these two districts alone reported 133 cases, 23 hospital admissions, and two fatalities. As of February 16, 28 active cases remain on admission in the Central Region, with 18 in Effutu, six in Cape Coast, and four in Agona West.

Despite these concerning figures, Akandoh highlighted some positive developments. “New cholera cases are decreasing,” he announced, adding that the once hard-hit districts of Agona West and Effutu are now showing a decline in new cases.

The Minister attributed this progress to the government’s robust response plan and the tireless efforts of healthcare workers and partners. Key components of the response include:
• Heightened surveillance: Rapid identification and management of cases.
• Strengthened laboratory capacity: Ensuring accurate and timely diagnosis.
• Environmental assessments: Addressing risk factors in affected communities.
• Cholera treatment centers: Establishing facilities to treat cases effectively.
• Public awareness campaigns: Educating communities on preventive measures.
• Oral cholera vaccines: Targeting high-risk areas to prevent further spread.

“This positive shift is a testament to the relentless efforts of our healthcare workers,” Akandoh emphasized.

The Health Minister also urged the public to continue practicing good hygiene and seek immediate medical care if they experience symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, or dehydration.
