2026 Budget – Mahama To Buy 4 Aircrafts

Published:

The government has announced an ambitious purchase of new aircraft, naval vessels and armored vehicles for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to enhance national security and operational readiness.

Presenting the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson said the multi-branch modernization plan will benefit the Army, Navy and Air Force, with implementation beginning in 2026.

Dr. Ato Forson disclosed that government has renegotiated a US$80 million supplier credit agreement with Elbit Systems Land Ltd of Israel for the acquisition of 19 armoured personnel carriers (APCs). This follows concerns that no vehicles had been delivered despite Ghana having already paid US$40 million under the previous agreement.

Under the new programme, the Ghana Navy is set to receive two 72-metre offshore patrol vessels, each equipped with a helipad and advanced combat systems. The vessels will support maritime patrols, protect offshore oil and gas installations, and enhance Ghana’s capacity to fight piracy and other illicit activities in the Gulf of Guinea.

The Ghana Air Force will also undergo significant upgrades, with plans to acquire four helicopters, one long-range aircraft, and one medium-range aircraft. These additions are expected to boost air mobility, surveillance operations and national emergency response. Deliveries are scheduled to be completed within four years.
