At least 16 people have been confirmed dead following a devastating head-on collision at Potrikrom in the Ahafo-Ano Southeast District of the Ashanti Region.
The fatal crash involved an ambulance with registration number GV 527–23 and a Ford Transit bus with registration number GT 6576–19. The incident reportedly occurred when the two vehicles, said to be travelling at high speed from opposite directions, collided along the stretch.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the Ford Transit bus was travelling from Kumasi towards Bechem at the time of the accident. The ambulance, reportedly belonging to St. Mary’s Catholic Hospital in Drobo, is said to have attempted to overtake another vehicle but failed to complete the manoeuvre, resulting in the head-on crash.
Several passengers aboard the bus are feared to have died instantly due to the impact, which eyewitnesses described as severe.
Personnel from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in Mankranso responded to the scene and conveyed the victims to mortuaries in Mankranso and Adugyama.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene, has expressed condolences to the bereaved families. In a Facebook post, he stated:
“I’ve received briefing about the tragic accident that has claimed the lives of 16 innocent souls at Potrikrom in the Ahafo Ano South East district. My deepest condolences go to their families. May their souls rest in peace.”
Authorities have since launched investigations to determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash.
