The Minority Caucus in Parliament has intensified its nationwide engagement with cocoa-growing communities, raising concerns over declining producer prices and persistent delays in payments within Ghana’s cocoa sector.
The third phase of the tour commenced on Tuesday in the Ahafo Region, led by Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh.
As part of the visit, the delegation paid courtesy calls on key traditional authorities to formally inform them of the exercise and solicit their support ahead of scheduled interactions with cocoa farmers. Among the chiefs visited were Nana Osei Kofi Abirie, Osuodogya Barima Appiahgya Boafo, and Osahene Kwaku Atekyi II.
Addressing the traditional leaders, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh explained that the tour is aimed at shedding light on the pressing challenges confronting cocoa farmers, including reduced farmgate prices, delayed payments, and broader structural issues affecting the industry.
He emphasised the Minority’s commitment to holding the government accountable while advocating for policies that protect the livelihoods of farmers and ensure the sustainability of the cocoa sector.
In response, the traditional leaders expressed concern over the deteriorating conditions in cocoa-growing communities. They urged the government to take urgent steps to address the challenges and restore confidence in the sector.
