Are Ghana’s Cities Prepared for the Incoming 2026 Floods?

Published:

Ghana’s major cities, particularly Accra, are entering the 2026 rainy season under heightened alert, following fresh warnings of above-normal rainfall and early signs of flooding that have already disrupted parts of the capital.

On Sunday, March 29, heavy rains triggered flash floods across sections of Accra, submerging roads, displacing families, and disrupting economic activity in key commercial areas. Communities such as Nima, Alajo, and parts of Tema were among the hardest hit, with rescue operations reportedly carried out to assist trapped residents.

The incident has reignited concerns over Ghana’s level of preparedness ahead of the peak rainy months.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has already projected above-normal rainfall between April and June 2026 across coastal and inland areas, including Accra, Tema, and Cape Coast. The forecast warns of an increased likelihood of flooding, particularly in low-lying and densely populated urban communities.

Urban planning challenges, including poor drainage systems, unregulated construction in flood-prone areas, and choked gutters, continue to undermine mitigation efforts. Accra’s rapid urbanisation and expanding informal settlements further complicate the situation, leaving millions vulnerable to recurring floods.

The March 29 floods may be an early warning of what lies ahead. As rainfall intensifies in the coming weeks, the resilience of Ghana’s cities will be tested—not only by the volume of rain but by the effectiveness of planning, enforcement, and public cooperation.
